Lilium pyrenaicum   Pyrenean Lily

Lilium pyrenaicum whole Lilium pyrenaicum close

This well known and often grown garden plant is endemic to northern Europe and is also known as Yellow Martagon Lily or Yellow Turk's-cap Lily. There is some confusion between the "Turk's-cap Lilies" such as this and Martagon Lily, Red Lily etc because apart from colour they all have similar unpleasant musty smells and variable leaf widths. It is possible that these lilies, long thought to be separate species are actually more closely related. Molecular biologists - over to you.

Lilium pyrenaicum grows as its name suggests in the Pyrenees, and in also in Spain at heights of up to 8,000 feet.
