Juncus castaneus   Chestnut Rush R DDD N

This for us has been a surprisingly difficult rush to find. It grows in a particular flush (boggy patch) on the side of the saddle between Ben Lawers and Beinn Ghlas but even when you know that it's there, you have to spend time hunting it down. We could only find three or four but they do seem to blend well with the background bog vegetation. The only rush which is about the same size with which you confuse this plant is Juncus squarrosus (Heath Rush) which doesn't grow nearby. When you do see Juncus squarrosus, which we did near the car park, there really isn't that much similarity

J. castaneus is found in the Grampians and northern hills of Scotland and nowhere elee in the British Isles or Ireland.
