Iris barnumiae forma urmiensis No English name
It is quite striking that differences in form among the Iris genus, can result in such different looking plants. Iris barnumiae forma barnumiae is a deep purple colour contrasting with the mid to pale yellow of forma urmiensis.
It is found in Armenia, Azerbaijan, Iran, Iraq, and Eastern Turkey where this specimen was discovered In 1887. Iris barnumiae species are named after Mrs Barnum who sent examples for study to Professor Sir Michael Foster who at the time was the expert in Iris breeding and cultivation. Mrs Barnum found her Irises about 2 hours from Lake Van which is approximately where we were looking for and found a few plants in flower in 2019.
