The alternate nature of leaves of this species are not always that obvious because amplexicaul plants have leaves which wrap around the stem to make a leaf-like structure on the opposite side. From some angles it looks as though it has opposite leaves. The prickliness of Prickly hakea is also quite variable but usually the holly-like nature of the leaves is apparent. The flowers are white or creamy pink and the shrub itself can be as much as 3 metres tall.

It is found in a wide belt near the coast from Perth to Albany but prefers the company of forest or shrubland.
