Fritillaria pyrenaica Pyrenean Snakeshead
We had stopped to see some Narcissus species in the mountains when someone found the first of quite a few of these Fritillaries. Like all Fritillaries they droop their heads such that it is quite difficult to see the patterns and colours inside the bell which attract the insects. Like many of the Fritillaries, this is such an attractive species that many nurseries and grad en centre sell both the native F. pyrenaica and cultivated varieties. It is found in the Pyrenees and in north western Spain.
