Epilobium alsinifolium   Chickweed Willowherb R DD N

Epilobium alsinifolium whole Epilobium alsinifolium close

To my surprise this plant which I associate with the highlands of Scotland is to be found on these north Pennine fells. It has ovate leaves which are a good deal wider than the other alpine in this genus with which it is often association: Epilobium anagallidifolium (Alpine Willowherb) which is also usually much smaller.

It is found only in alpine regions the majority of which are in Scotland, some here in the limestone pennines and others in Snowdonia in Wales but there is none to be found in southern England and only one record from Ireland.
