Emberiza schoeniclus   Reed Bunting

Emberiza schoeniclus Emberiza schoeniclus on a twig

Emberiza schoeniclus is a passerine bird in the Bunting family (Emberizidae). It looks like a typical Finch and at one time was classified a such. It's short, wide beak indicates its preference for nuts, seeds and berries rather than insects but it does feed the young with insects. The Yellowhammer (Emberiza citrinella ) is a similar shape but looks really nothing like this bird the colouring of which reminds you of a common sparrow. It tends to frequent farmland and as the common name suggests, wet areas. This one was photographed from a hide near a lake.
