Dendrocopos major   Greater Spotted Woodpecker

Dendrocopus major

A frequent visitor to our feeders in harsh winter weather, this is nevertheless a very shy bird which will fly away if you move even slightly when trying to photograph it from distance. We hear the drumming in our trees in Spring which is not nest making but attempts to attract a mate. The male has a small crimson patch at the back of its head which females and juveniles lack.
