Dacelo novaeguineae   Kookaburra or Laughing Jackass

Dacelo novaeguineae pair Dacelo novaeguineae facing

The Kookaburra is not actually native to western Australia but is quite at home there. It is carnivorous and although a member of the Kingfisher family doesn't necessarily live near water and will take snakes, lizards and mice. Best known for its call which sounds like someone laughing, you have to hear a dawn chorus of four or five Kookaburras to understand what an incredible noise they can make.
