Crocus vernus   Spring Crocus DD I

Crocus vernus group Crocus vernus flower

C. vernus is an introduction from southern Europe which readily naturalises in the countryside. At this location it had escaped from old gardens and into nearby fields where it easily competed with snowdrops, meadow grasses and daffodils. The small blue flower nearby is Scilla bifolia (Alpine Squill).

It has naturalised extensively in southern England and can be found in northern England, southern Scotland, Wales but only occasionally in eastern ireland.
