Clematis vitalba whole Clematis vitalba close

In the South of England and Wales you can see this plant in many hedgerows and notice it particularly when it has flowered and the distinctive feathery fruits are showing.

C. vitalba is very common in central and southern England and much of lowland Wales but records quickly diminish as you go north and there isn't much recorded in Scotland. It is common in Ireland.
