There are several "Holly-leaved" Chorizema species and C. nanum according to various texts doesn't have red flowers. However it was very small, does grow in this area according to Florabase, was found in a deep shade in a forest and there were labels nearby saying Chorizema nanum!

I would have thought C. illicifolium (Holly-leaved Flame-pea) would be a better bet but that is coastal so this is yet another doubtful id.
