Chenopodium ficifolium   Fig-leaved Goosefoot C DD N

In this rare bit of arable land in Guernsey in 2004, we noted how even the weeds were somehow better quality than the ones we were used to seeing back home in the North West of England. We had come to find the rare Chenopodiastrum murale (Nettle-leaved Goosefoot)and were lucky enough to find this plant growing nearby (RHS photo).

In 2020, we had 8 tons of top soil delivered to partially fill a pond. I thought it would be a good experiment to see what grew from this bare earth. As well as Chenopodium album we found a good deal of Chenopodium ficifolium. (LHS and bottom photo)

Chenopodium ficifolium is mostly found in central and southern England and is not common in the west but can be found in the north west and is not uncommon in Cheshire where some of these photos were taken. It is rarely found in Scotland and confined to a few southerly sites in Ireland.
