Ceratophyllum submersum   Soft Hornwort R DD N

Ceratophyllum submersum whole Ceratophyllum submersum close

We had to fish for a long time to find any of this plant which as its name suggests was submerged at the bottom of a ditch. The flowers like C. demersum (Rigid Hornwort) are inconspicuous but the leaves are branched 3 or 4 times.

It is less common than C. demersum but favours southern England. There is very little in Wales, none in Scotland and only a few sites in Ireland.
