Castanea sativa Sweet Chestnut C DD I
The Sweet Chestnut is a Southern European introduction which when seen in much of the country's woodland, will have been planted. In the South of England however it can be naturalised and this small tree was clearly part of the dense natural vegetation of the small woodland site.
Castanea sativa is recorded from all counties of England and Wales and is found throughout Scotland. It is also recorded from Ireland but is less common.
