Caltha palustris Marsh Marigold or King Cups C DD N
This plant flowers every year starting in January in one of the woods near home when most of its companions in nearby marshy ground are only pushing up a few leaves. I have also seen it flower very early elsewhere but this is really a late March - April flowering plant. This photo was taken amongst a large patch on the banks of the River Ouse at Bishopthorpe near York. The river tends to rise and fall dramatically in the winter keeping ground near the banks in the soggy condition which Caltha palustris enjoys.
