Bromopsis erecta   Upright Brome C DD N

Bromopsis erecta whole Bromopsis erecta close

This grass is typical of calcareous soil habitats and can even be the dominant, nuisance grass in Limestone areas. The tall habit makes it difficult to miss and the flower heads are quite often purplish like the close-up shows. Usually, as the name suggests, the flower heads are erect but at this site many were drooping. Bromopsis erecta was for quite a long time known as Bromus erecta but there have been quite a few taxonomic changes and splits in the Bromus genus since then.

Bromopsis erecta is common in southern and middle England tending to prefer the eastern side of the country. It is uncommon in most of Wales, Scotland and the far south west of England. In Ireland a small band in the centre of the island is where it can most easily be found.
