This delicate little plant is usually found in quantity on neutral or basic soils where it shakes in the slightest breeze. It is such a handsome and exotic looking plant that it is sometimes difficult to remember that it is one of our native grasses.

It will grow almost anywhere and is common throughout the British Isles but becomes scarcer towards the north of Scotland.
