Biarum tenuifolium Narrow-leaved Biarum
Related to our common British plant, Arum maculatum (Lords-and-ladies/Cuckoo Pint) this is a very dark, quite small plant. The spathe sometimes emerges before the leaf sheath which can be, as the name suggests, very long and narrow. It typically grows in dry stony habitats exactly where we found it. Most of the Biarum genus attract flies as pollinators with a foul smelling scent and some of group bravely got down on the hard, stony, dusty soil and stuck their noses next to this plant no more than a few centimetres tall. They all said it smelled bad and I accepted their word for that.
