Banksia menziesii Firewood Banksia Endemic
The peak flowering time for Banksia menziesii is from May (Autumn) to July (Winter) but there are always a few blooms outside this period. As the common name suggests this species of Banksia will germinate after a fire. This is one of many plants in Western Australia which has evolved to attract birds as pollinators. It needs to be pollinated by and outside agent because it is self incompatible. This often means that any pollen produced is mature before the stigmas are developed enough to receive it. Another interesting mechanism is that foraging by bees has no effect of further flowering but foraging by birds causes an increase in the numbers of florets which bloom.
Banksia menziesii is found from around the Perth area where it can be a tree up to 35 feet tall north to the drier regions around north of Geraldton where trees are much smaller.
