Alyssum montanum Mountain Alison
One of the interesting aspects of field botany is the lunch stop surprise. As we sat down in the cold sunshine to eat our lunch naturally we were closer to the ground and started to peruse the newly growing vegetation for flowering plants. This tiny plant was just coming into flower and will eventually be much taller but at this time in early Spring in the Sierra Guadarrama hills was no more than 2 cm tall and pretty much invisible if you were standing up.
Alyssum montanum is not uncommon in Spain and central Europe as a whole and is also known from some Baltic states and Greece. In Spain it is thought to be Alyssum montanum ssp montanum and some know it as Alyssum fastigiatum. It has been occasionally seen in the British Isles according to pre 1930 records.
