Achillea clavennae Silvery Milfoil
Silvery grey leaves are the attractive characteristic of this little alpine Achillea which we found growing on huge lump of limestone.
Achillea clavennae was named after the Italian botanist Nicholas Clavena who was an apothecary at Belluna and who studied the plant after it had first been discovered by Carolus Clusius. However as sometimes happens when people try to translate in to Latin, the attributing author used a double n in the species name: clavennae when it should really be spelled clavenae. Once the name has been accepted of course it stays and such errors cannot be rectified. See also Cypripedium calceolus which was supposed to mean Lady's Slipper in Latin but actually translates as Lady's foot.
Achillea clavennae is found in the southern and eastern Alps and in some Balkan mountains at heights of between 5,000 feet and 8,000 feet.
