Acer pseudoplatanus   Sycamore I

Acer pseudoplatanus

This introduced tree causes more problems than people realise when it escapes into our woodlands. It gives quite dense shade which prevent both sunlight and water reaching the plants at ground level. Many of our native woodland plants require the dappled shade of Birch and Oak woodland and so they die out under the Sycamore. The tree itself is know for its winged seed which spin to the ground like little helicopters.

Acer pseudoplatanus is found throughout the British Isles and Ireland.
