Duke of Burgundy   Hamearis lucina

Hamearis lucina top Hamearis lucina under

The Duke of Burgundy butterfly is the only European member of the Riodinidae family most of which are otherwise found in South America. This family is known as the "Metalmarks". This is a vulnerable and declining species due to the usual reason: loss of habitat. It was originally most often found in coppiced woodland but now is found on calcareous scrub such as limestone pavement and disused quarries. The male is an aggressive butterfly which patrols its chosen area and sees off much larger species such as the Pearl Bordered Fritillary.
