Xanthosia tomentosa   Lesueur Southern Cross Endemic

Xanthosia tomentosa wholeXanthosia tomentosa close

On the lookout for Macropidia fuliginosa (Black Kangaroo Paw) which can be found in this area and north up to Geraldton and south to near Perth, we spied one at the side of the road. Delighted with this find of an uncommon plant, it was a while before we noticed another species growing in the shade of the Black Kangaroo Paw. It was this Xanthosia tomentosa and although not quite fully out, turns out to be even rarer than the Black Kangaroo Paw being confined to the Lesueur sandplains. When fully in bloom the flowers would have the typical Southern Cross shape.
