Trachystemon orientalis Abraham-Isaac-Jacob I
I was led to the site for this plant in the 1980s ago where it has already been established for ages. It still flowers at the side of this little road in Anglesey and the patch has neither expanded nor diminished. It is not only an early plant but one which flowers very quickly. I went to look for the flowers on 12th of January when there were just a few small leaves emerging from the ground. Today there were leaved, stems and flowers some of which had already gone over. This introduced plant is found in Turkey and the Caucuses.
The English name Abraham-Isaac-Jacob has, in the past, been given to more than one wild flower such as Lungwort (Pulmonaria sp) and Common Comfrey (Symphytum officinalis). It was used where the flowers tend to change colour.
Trachystemon orientalis is dotted around in England, southern Scotland a coastal Wales. There is very little in northern Scotland or Ireland.
