Tofieldia calyculata Tofield's Asphodel
Named after Thomas Tofield (1730 to 1779) this is an arctic alpine found in Europe at heights of up to 8,500 feet according to the various flora. In 1995 DNA and cladistic research placed it in a new family Tofieldiacea. In Britain the only member of the genus we can find is Tofieldia pusilla which is smaller as the name suggests and had white flowers.
Although it can be found dotted here and there in Scandinavian countries, Greenland and north America, the majority of the population in Europe can be found in the Alps and Pyrenees.
