Stylidium breviscapum   Boomerang Triggerplant

Stylidium breviscapum white Stylidium breviscapum yellow

Triggerplants are sensitive to touch and any insect landing on the flower causes the "trigger" to trap the insect. The insect struggles to get away and is covered in pollen which it then transfers to the next trigger plant it lands on. The trigger comprises both male and female parts of the plant fused into a single column. The trigger resets itself after a few hours.

The trigger plant is a borderline carnivore (protocarnivore) as it is capable not only of trapping an insect for pollination but has sticky glands on the stem which contain an enzyme capable of digesting the insect.
