Saxifraga x urbium   Londonpride I

Saxifraga x urbium whole Saxifraga x urbium whole

This is the hybrid between Saxifraga umbrosa (Pyrenean Saxifrage) and Saxifraga spathularis (St. Patrick's-cabbage) known to all gardeners as LondonPride. It prefers shady habitats and with the right soil will spread amazingly quickly. This patch in a quarry has doubled in size in only a couple of years and is now very extensive. As the quarry is close to houses it becomes the ideal place for people to dump their unwanted garden waste which typically how this plant gets into the wild.

Saxifraga x urbium has naturalised itself in many parts of England, Wales and Scotland but in Ireland it is common only in the north.
