Saxifraga longifolia   Pyrenean Saxifrage Endemic

Saxifraga longifolia whole Saxifraga longifolia close

There is no mistaking this large member of the Saxifragaceae family which is endemic to the Pyrenees, a few eastern Spanish hills and the Atlas mountains of North Africa. The very distinctive rosettes take five or seven years to flower and being monocarpic the plant then dies. Very often this plant will be seen growing horizontally out of what looks like a sheer rock face.

Saxifraga longifolia is a limestone loving plant which can be found in mountains from hieghts of 2,000 feet and 8,000 feet.
