Ptilotus polystachyus Prince of Wales Feather
There seemed to be plenty of Ptilotus polystachyus in the areas we explored in south western Australia and it is quite common in an area around Perth and in the wheat belt. This native plant is found in many other parts of Australia as well.
P. polystachyus is typical of many wild Australian native plants in that it will grow in very poor soils and accumulates Phosphorus from these low nutrient habitats. Unlike many Australian native plants though it can tolerate high phosphorus habitats too so in theory could be grown as garden plant where normal phosphorus concentrations are much higher than in the wildernesses of Australia.
