Populus nigra Black-poplar C DD N
"Black-poplar" includes some well known garden and park varieties like the Lombardy-poplar and the Giant Lombardy-poplar but this one (probably ssp betulifolia) is usually found in open country by streams and ponds. This particular tree has its trunk actually in the water at one edge of a deep pond. The red catkins are male with undehisced anthers and the dehisced (empty of pollen) anthers appear black.
Populus nigra is found frequently in Central England, Ireland, Wales and East Anglia but the distribution decreases towards Northern England and there is little to be found in Scotland.
