Persicaria amplexicaulis Red Bistort I
This an introduced plant from the Himalayas which is often grown in gardens. The heart-shaped leaves (cordate) clasp the stem hence the species name: amplexicaulis.
It is not uncommon in southern England, the midlands and the north west but much less common elsewhere.
