Ophrys tenthredinifera Sawfly Orchid
This is usually found in grassy or stony places (Maquis) and having a distinctive yellow border to the labellum it is fairly easy to recognise. It is quite a small orchid a little shorter than a typical Ophrys apifera (Bee Orchid) which we find in the U.K. in June.
Taxonomy: Most authorities agree that the accepted name for this taxon is Ophrys tenthredinifera Willd. On a hillside in Gargano a low growing version of O. tenthredinifera named Ophrys neglecta Parl. was identified but the main databases say this is merely a synonym for Ophrys tenthredinifera Willd. and so do not recognise this either as a sub species or as a separate species like authors such as Pierre Delforge.
