Ophrys scolopax ssp apiformis   Wasp Bearing Ophrys

Ophrys scolopax ssp apiformis close

This was the first orchid clump we found on our Naturetrek trip to the French Pyrenees and I thought it was Ophrys scolopax at first although the markings weren't quite right. Later it was identified as a sub species so the first guess wasn't far out.

Taxonomy: The name given to us for this taxon was Ophrys picta Link. but again this is favoured only by those experts who hate sub species. Kew and the big databases say the correct name for this species is Ophrys scolopax ssp apiformis (Desf.) Maire & Weiller
