Nigella segetalis
This was a bird watching trip by a lake outside Van, the town where we were staying. A patch of rough ground nearby the reed beds was the place where the best plants were to be found including this Nigella segetalis. It is found in Ukraine, Turkey and Iran with outposts here and there.
Nigella segetalis has several synonyms including Nigella armena, Nigella verrucosa and Nigella bicolor but GBIF gives other synonyms as well including Nigella arvensis which is illustrated as a separate species in various Flora texts. This plant could possibly be Nigella arvensis which is illustrated with blue paler petals but also paler reproductive parts unlike this plant so nothing can be clarified so far.
