This is a native and a frequent garden escape and it is not too easy to tell which is which. This specimen is actually growing under trees near a limestobne valley and has the characteristic hooked hairs (not visible in the photo) which identify it as M. sylvatica.

M. sylvatica is very common in Engaldn and Wales but records become fewer as you go into western or northern Scotland. It is uncommon in Ireland.
