Medicago sativa ssp sativa Lucerne DD I
This is a common scrambling plant of the pea family which I find most often near the sea or in very sandy places but it can also grow on waste ground. It used to be grown as a crop so there are bound to be escapes from this older cultivation around the country.
M. sativa ssp sativa is found throughout England and coastal Wales, Records diminish as you go north and there is little recorded from the north of Scotland. It is uncommon in Ireland.
