Maniola jurtina   Meadow Brown

Maniola jurtina male Maniola jurtina underwing

This butterfly is a common visitor to the acre of grass in our garden but not one which poses for long. It is known to feed on Helictotrichon ssp, Agrostis ssp, Brachypodium ssp, Festuca ssp and the one type of grass which grows in the garden: Poa ssp.

In the wild it is often found sampling the nectar of brambles (Rubus fruticosus agg.) and in our garden, Marjoram (Origanum vulgare) flowers.
