Lepidium subulatum
Lepidium subulatum is a small shrub which is native to this arid part of southern Spain and to similar parts of northern Africa. It is a Gypsophite which means it flourishes in soils rich in Gypsum (Hydrated Calcium Sulphate). Such soils in arid regions produce a crust with a high concentration of Sulphate ions which is usually poisonous or at least inhibits germination and growth in most species. This particular plant was growing in exactly the dry inhospitable soils which research has shown that this plant favours.
