Lasiopetalum drummondii    Velvet Bush Endemic

Lasiopetalum drummondii whole Lasiopetalum drummondii close

The genus name means shaggy (lasios) and petal or leaf (petalum) which describes the appearance of these rather strange looking flowers. Velvet Bush is a member of the family Malvaceae. They are related to Thomasia, another species where the flowers hang down so the photographer has to try to get underneath and point the camera skywards.

Although not threatened with extinction, Lasiopetalum drummondii is found in a relatively small area around the Lesueur Sandplains and just south of Geraldton but nowhere else.
