Hipparchia semele   Grayling

Hipparchia semele Hipparchia semele

This butterfly is rarely seen with its wings open except when flying so this underwing view is the commonest. It feeds on various grasses such as Festuca ssp but is often recorded near the coast where Amophila arenaria (Marram Grass), another of its food plants, is found in the dunes.
