Hepatica nobilis whole Hepatica nobilis close

Found in Scandinavia, the Alps and the Apennines as well as the Pyrenees, this plant has flowers which are pink or blue but only rarely white or this bluish white like these in the photo. Being an early Spring flower (March or April) we didn't really expect to find any in flower except perhaps at the highest altitudes and that is precisely where this one was: just below the Cirque de Gavarnie which even in mid summer had extensive snow patches at the bases of the peaks.

It is occasionally found in the British Isles where it is known as Liverleaf.
