Gypsophila repens   Alpine Gypsophila

Gypsophila repens whole Gypsophila repens close

The familiar Gypsophila paniculata (Baby's Breath) so beloved of florists looks so unlike this plant you wouldn't at first think they were the same genus. This plant reminds you more of low growing Arabis than Gypsophila but perhaps that it is because this an an alpine species. The species name repens means it creeps and it certainly seemed to spread over soil and rocks making large patches of pink and white flowers with glaucous leaves in a procumbent habit.
