Equisetum variegatum Variegated Horsetail
There are are quite a few horsetails which grow in Switzerland according to Flora Helvetica but this was the only example we saw during our week long stay in the Engadine region. In the British Isles E. variegatum is often a quite small, procumbent and easily overlooked plant but these specimens were upright and taller than the typical British specimen. The greyish edges above the black band to the leaf sheaths are typical of this species.
