Horsetails aren't easy to identify but this one has one particular feature which makes it different from the others. It has a large hollow centre so that it is quite easy to fold the stem in two. The numbers of teeth vary and so does the number and length of the branches - it quite often has none at all. It does, as its name suggest like to grow with its feet in the water.

E. fluviatile is found throughout the British Isles and Ireland.
