Diphasiastrum alpinum   Alpine Clubmoss

Surprisingly we saw very little Clubmoss on the various walks we did in the Engadine of the Swiss Alps although Huperzia selago (Fir Clubmoss) and Selaginella selaginoides (Lesser Clubmoss) are common in this area. Clubmosses are of course not mosses at all but vascular plants and this one, common in the United Kingdom's high hills in Wales, northern England and Scotland, is characterised by the often flat glaucous leaves rising from which are the reproductive cones.
