Carlina vulgaris Carline Thistle C DD N
This is a very common plant on the dunes of Newborough but its high summer flowering period is deceptively short. You see the tight buds for ages before the flower actually opens in July/August and by the end of September or even before then, it has finished flowering with no hangers-on.
It is found throughout England, Wales and in the centre of Ireland but become scarcer as you go north into Scotland.
