Asplenium x microdon   The Guernsey Fern RRR DD N Endemic

X Asplenium microdon X Asplenium microdon

This is a hybrid between Asplenium scolopendrium (Hart's Tongue Fern) and Asplenium obovatum (Lanceolate Spleenwort) and is an instance of hybridisation between two different species of fern now deemed to be in the same genus (Asplenium). It is sterile and looks exactly like a cross between these two ferns would look like if you imagined it. This hybrid has been known for quite a long time on Guernsey having been found by a Miss A. Wilkinson in 1855.

Following the change of one parent: Phyllitis scolopendrium to Asplenium scolopendrium, the name of this now intra generic hybrid has recently changed (New Flora of the British Isles Third Edition by Clive Stace 2010) from x Asplenophyllitis microdon to Asplenium x microdon.
