Asplenium septentrionale   Forked Spleenwort

Asplenium septentrionale whole Asplenium septentrionale close

Also known as Northern Spleenwort, I had believed that A. septentrionale was probably confined to the hills of northern Europe. Imagine my surprise when we found this handsome specimen growing out of a rock crevice right next to one of the busiest parts of the trail to the Cirque de Gavarnie. It is actually found commonly in the Pyrenees and perhaps I had forgotten how high high we already were in the mountains, the hot sun fooling us into thinking of lowland habitats.
